Save the date! Jefferson Park dedication is scheduled for Saturday July 14, 2012. Follow this website in the upcoming weeks for additional information.
The dedication includes:

• Jefferson Park expansion (completed 2011)
• Jefferson Skatepark (completed 2012)
• Jefferson Playfield (completed 2012)
• Jefferson Park cherry tree planting (to be completed prior to dedication)
• Beacon Mountain and solar shelters (to be completed prior to dedication)

Project Description

The Parks and Green Spaces Levy funds the further implementation of the Jefferson Park Master Plan.

Parks held a meeting on December 1, 2009 at Jefferson Community Center. At this meeting Parks provided information and gathered public input on the design for the following aspects in the park:

• Beacon Mountain
• Park service road and promenade
• Jefferson Playfield Improvements
• Jefferson skatepark and basketball court

Parks received good bids for Phase One work which allows for additional items to be integrated into Phase One work under the Pro Parks project. The priority worksheets helped Parks determine the possible additions for Phase One. Phase Two: As a separate project (time line, 2009-2011) Parks will be looking at ways to improve Jefferson Play Field which will include synthetic turf and lighting.

Phase Three: Another separate project (time line, 2010-2011) will include the skateboard park (which has dedicated funding), basketball court, and possibly additional parking at the community center.

Beacon Mountain is a community initiated project that is funded in part by the Levy. It is intended to be an ecologically oriented playscape situated in the future Jefferson Park site. The Mountain is envisioned as a climbable collection of slopes and boulders with on-grade slides and a spraypark sprinkler for summer cooling and fun. The project is under construction and we anticipate completion in early 2012.

Seattle City Light will be providing funding to construct picnic shelters that have solar panels as rooftops. The proposed locations for the shelters are very close to what is shown in master plan. One location is adjacent to Beacon Mountain, and the other adjacent to the sportsmeadow/lid. At the sportsmeadow lid we are proposing to split it in half so that it faces the fields and can still have roofs that face south.

The solar energy would go into Seattle City Light's electric grid. As with all grid-tied energy sources, the electrons will be used by the nearest load (meaning it will help power the park's lights, and maybe the community center). Essentially, this means less energy from traditional sources brought in to meet the local demand.

Jefferson Park Playfield is another park component that the Levy funds. The renovation includes creating a synthetic turf field with lighting. Schematic design has been approved by the user groups and parks. SDOT is currently reviewing a proposal for on-street parking adjacent to the playfield on 16th Ave. S. Construction Documents were submitted for permitting in 2010 with construction occurring in 2011. In March 2011, the project went to City Council for approval of the height of the light poles.

Community Participation

The Beacon Hill community participated in three planning meetings, held for the future developments at Jefferson Park, during the spring and summer 2010. They provided important input on the Jefferson Skatepark, Beacon Mountain and Jefferson Playfield. This input was used to shape the final schematic designs.
