Wallingford Neighborhood Greenway

Thank you for all your input during our open house in December 2011.  After careful consideration, SDOT has changed the median island design at Stone Way N and N 43rd Street.  The revised design still provides pedestrians and bicyclists with a significant safety improvement because:   

  1. Left turn movements will be taken more slowly and with more awareness of crossing pedestrians and bicyclists. 
  2. The islands on the approaches to the crosswalks allow pedestrians and bicyclists the opportunity to cross half the roadway, with a stopping area. 
  3. SDOT anticipates good compliance of motorist stopping at the new crosswalk because pedestrians and bicyclists will be visible. 

The original median island design with restricted left turns raised concerns as a new development on the north west corner has their only driveway access on N 43rd Street.  Restricting left turns at Stone Way N and N 43rd Street would have re-routed traffic through other residential streets and additional parking restrictions at the intersections may have been necessary. 

Diverting left turning traffic from the greenway is not critical to its success as traffic volumes are already low.  In the end, SDOT determined that the full median with left turns restricted did not outweigh the impacts to the surrounding neighborhood.

The Seattle Department of Transportation (SDOT), working with area residents, has evaluated and is proposing to install a neighborhood greenway in Wallingford. The community successfully competed for funding through the Neighborhood Project Fund in 2010.

Neighborhood greenways are routes on non-arterial streets that are optimized for safe, family-friendly bicycle and pedestrian travel, and are usually designed for reduced vehicle speeds and volumes.  The greenway will improve access to Wallingford Center, Wallingford Playfield, Hamilton International School, and the school programs located in the Lincoln High School building.

The Wallingford Neighborhood Greenway will start at Latona Avenue NE and NE 44th Street. The greenway will continue west on NE/N 44th Street and turn south onto Burke Avenue North.  From Burke, the greenway will continue west on North 43rd Street and cross Stone Way North.

Proposed project elements along the greenway route include:

  • Signs and pavement legends
  • Spot pavement repairs
  • Crossing improvements
  • Improved landscaping at some traffic circles
  • Limited parking restrictions at traffic circles
  • Median island with access changes at Stone Way North and North 43rd Street
