Electric Vehicle Charging Installer Program

A person is working on an electrical panel, connecting wires. The individual’s focus is on the task at hand, with their hands manipulating cables within the open panel which contains various electrical components.

The future of transportation for Seattle City Light’s customers is electric—and the transition is happening now. Transitioning our entire transportation sector will be a significant effort, numerous skills, roles, and careers will be needed. Employment and training opportunities for careers in electrification are available now, and more are being created every day.

EV Charging Installer Program (EVCIP)

There is an increase in demand for EV charging stations throughout Washington as EVs become more mainstream. Properly certified and licensed firms are needed to upgrade the existing infrastructure to accommodate this shift. Therefore, a new economic opportunity has emerged for electricians.

Recognizing that there may be potential barriers for women and minority owned firms to participate in the clean energy economy, the EV Charging Installer Program (EVCIP) focuses on assisting these firms so that they can participate in our clean transportation transformation.

Upon successfully completion of this program, participants will have achieved the following:

  • Women and Minority Owned Business Enterprises (WMBE) Certification

Assistance for Enrolled Firms

Firms enrolled in this program will have access to tools, training, and mentorship to achieve the WMBE certification, EVITP certification, and opportunities to bid for EV charger installations. The assistance provided will be tailored to the needs of the enrolled firms.

WMBE Certification

We will help enrolled firms navigate and complete the certification process. This includes connecting the enrolled firm with the Washington State Office of Minority and Women’s Business Enterprises Certification program and/or the City of Seattle’s self-reporting system. The program will also provide a rebate to reimburse the State WMBE registration fee ($50 - $100).

EVITP Certification

In addition to covering the $275 EVITP training and exam fee, we will assist enrolled firms in navigating the application process and managing course completion. This includes troubleshooting for issues that arise from sign-up and receipt of necessary training and testing materials from the EVITP program. Firms enrolled in the EVCIP will receive their program rebate ($275) once they receive a passing score on the EVITP exam and provide proof of EVITP certification. EVCIP participant firms are eligible for rebates to certify up to four staff members.

Business Development Assistance

We will meet with enrolled contractors on an on-going basis to discuss potential business development opportunities. We will also provide assistance in navigating rebate processes for City Light EV charging incentive programs to both the participating firm and their clients.

Opportunities for Project Bids

We maintain a list of contractors who are currently enrolled or have completed EVCIP. This list will be shared with interested customers by request. Note: Seattle City Light does not have a list of approved contractors for our charger rebate program and does not pre-qualify contractors.
