Healthy Food in Schools

Seattle Office of Sustainability and Environment (OSE) is working to support more fresh, nutritious, sustainable, and culturally relevant foods within Seattle Public Schools in partnership with the SPS Culinary Services Program and community partners.

Supported by revenue from the Seattle Sweetened Beverage Tax, OSE’s Healthy Food in Schools programming includes:

  • Fresh Fruit and Vegetable Program, providing all students in 13 participating Seattle Public Schools with a variety of free fresh fruits and vegetables during the school day.
    • The goals of the program are to provide healthier food choices to youth, expand the variety of fruits and vegetables children experience, and increase children's fruit and vegetable consumption.
    • OSE partners with Seattle Public Schools to offer the program to schools with high rates of students eligible for free & reduced-price meals, providing fresh produce to over 3,000 students each week.
  • Working with SPS to help increase purchases of fresh, sustainably produced ingredients from local and BIPOC-owned farms and food producers, and increase capacity for more scratch cooked, culturally relevant meals.
  • Building support for more sustainable, nutritious, and equitable school food and nutrition education by increasing awareness, support, and participation in SPS meal programs by students, parents, and the community.
