About
Montlake Community Center is closed for construction until Fall 2024 for the ADA Barrier Removal Project. See below for more information.
Centrally located in a quiet neighborhood on Portage Bay, south of the University of Washington and State Route 520, just west of the Washington Park Arboretum.
The center is comprised of two buildings. The main building was remodeled in 2009 adding a multipurpose room (with kitchen), activity room, and a sports court that can be used for a variety of activities such as basketball, volleyball and toddler gym. The other building, known as the Roger Peter Tudor Building, the original community center, is located across from the main building and is used for youth and adult programs. It has an active pottery studio for classes and drop-in programs. The surroundings include a play area, tennis courts, a basketball court and a well-used sports field.

The Play Area has been re-opened and Tennis court access has been restored. The only remaining work includes landscaping, sewer pipe installation and covering, and repairing an emergent issue with a drain line under the building.
This construction project will be combined with work at Laurelhurst Community Center.
Programming Impacts:
Programming, including classes and activities, will be impacted by this work. Please contact the community center staff directly for additional information.
Budget
Real Estate Excise Tax provides for an estimated construction cost of $1.7M.
Schedule
Design: January 2020 - February 2023
Bidding: April - June 2023
Construction: November 2023 - Fall 2024
Project Description
This project corrects approximately 60 documented barriers to accessibility on the Seattle Barrier Removal Schedule. The project includes:
- Accessible parking stalls at the west entrance
- Accessible pathways, ramp, and entrance from the parking area to the community center, Tudor Building, tennis courts, playground, basketball court, baseball, and track & sports field
- Miscellaneous interior improvements to remove barriers to accessibility (and the ADA) at toilet rooms, multi-purpose rooms, kitchen, etc.
Lawn and planting areas disturbed during construction will be restored once construction is completed. New trees will also be planted to replace most of the ones that recently failed.
Anticipated Site Impacts:
The Community Center, play area, playfield and parking lot will be closed to the public during construction. Restroom closures will be mitigated by providing portable toilets as needed.
