Ballard Healthy Street
March 10, 2023
What's Happening Now?
Construction Coming Soon!
As soon as Spring 2023, the Ballard Healthy Street on 17th Ave NW, from NW 90th St to NW 58th St is becoming permanent! We will be installing permanent signage with a concrete block base and new painted curb space around it at each intersection. Unauthorized on-street parking located at Healthy Street corners of the intersection, within 20ft of the intersection, will be removed for new installation.
Healthy Streets Planters: For permanent Healthy Street locations, we can install planters instead of concrete block bases at Healthy Street intersections (see diagram below). Healthy Street planters will need to be watered and maintained by neighbors. If you do not live directly at the corner where a Healthy Street Planter can be placed, you can work with your neighbors to create a partnership for a Healthy Street Planter.
If you are interested in requesting and taking care of a planter at your Healthy Street, please fill out this form. You will also need to sign and submit a Landscape Maintenance Agreement.

Storm Water Improvements
This Healthy Street location is an important connection for students walking to and from Whitman Middle School. In addition to street improvements, there will also be drainage improvements at this location. To learn more about the 17th Ave NW Stormwater Improvements please visit the website here.
Program overview
Healthy Streets are an important tool for Seattleites to get outside, travel to grocery stores, pharmacies, and local businesses, and get exercise. They make it possible for people to walk, roll, and bike in the street while staying 6 feet apart during the COVID-19 pandemic. Installed as part of our emergency response to the pandemic in 2020, they also provide an opportunity for you to consider how they might improve your community long-term.
How were streets selected?
Most Healthy Streets were installed along Neighborhood Greenways, which have traffic calming like speed humps, improvements to make it easy to cross busy streets, and have gone through a community engagement process. These improvements were also in place along the Beacon Hill route, and so it was designated a Healthy Street in June 2020 to provide additional space in Beacon Hill during the pandemic.
