What's Happening Now?

Construction at 3rd Ave S and S Main St starts as soon as Friday, December 13, 2024 to create a more enjoyable experience for visitors and commuters.  We will begin our work just south of the intersection of 3rd Avenue S and Yesler Way.  You can read more details about the work below.

What are we doing? (Project Overview)

Phase 1 (Current Phase)

Construction will begin just south of the 3rd Ave and Yesler intersection. During this first phase of work, the contractor will install fiber conduit between S Washington St and Yesler Way, and stormwater infrastructure at the 3rd/Washington intersection. After the underground work is complete, the contractor will begin paving.

How will this affect you?
You should expect noise and dust from the work site. As early as 7am on Saturday, December 14, 2024, our crews will be sawcutting in order to prep for work.

What if I‘m driving to the area?
We aim to maintain driving access to the area throughout construction. To accomplish this, traffic will shift to the opposite side of the street where work is occurring.

What if I need to park in the area?
During the first phase of construction, parking along the east side of 3rd Avenue south of Yesler will be temporarily not allowed. We are doing this so that our crews can complete their work without delay and to keep people and their vehicles safe.

The bus layover zones on the southeast corner of S Washington St and 3rd Ave S and the northeast corner of S Main St and 3rd Ave S will now become a combination of loading and parking zones.. Signage will be installed to reflect this change in the next week.

We understand that all of these things are disruptive to the neighborhood and appreciate your patience. This transportation project will make the neighborhood look and function better. We're introducing better sidewalks, new trees and an art installation, improved lighting, a smoother street, and a revamped bus stop. These improvements not only keep buses reliable but make it easier and more pleasant to explore this vibrant neighborhood.

Our project will:

  • Widen sidewalks
  • Reconstruct pavement
  • Repaint crosswalks
  • Add pedestrian lighting
  • Plant new trees
  • We will also update the bus stop by -
    • Adding new seating
    • Installing real-time bus arrival information sign
    • Installing an ORCA card reader

What about traffic and parking?

Businesses in the neighborhood asked to keep two-way traffic so people driving can continue to go north and south. The updated design, makes room for this request by:

  • Shifting parking on the east side of 3rd Ave S (in front of the art galleries and opposite the bus stop) to S Washington St and S Main St where buses currently park when they are not operating. People will also be able to use these locations for loading.
  • At the corner of 3rd Ave S at S Washington St, in front of the Pioneer Square Clinic, there will be a large space for dropping off and picking up people.
