Safe Routes to School: Rainier View Elementary

Construction of the Rainier View Elementary Project is complete!

Project Overview

In spring 2018, crews completed improvements for the Rainier View Elementary School Safe Routes to School project, making safer and easier for kids, families, and neighbors to walk and bike to Rainier View Elementary School.

This project was part of Seattle's Vision Zero program to end traffic deaths and serious injuries by 2030.

The project included improvements at 8 intersections along S Bangor St, Beacon Ave S, and 55th Ave S listed below:

  • 51st Ave S and S Bangor St – Curb extensions and ADA ramps on the east side of the intersection.
  • 55th Ave S and S Bangor St – Curb extensions, ADA ramps and crosswalk flashing beacons on the west side of the intersection.
  • Beacon Ave S and S Leo St – Curb extensions and ADA ramps on the east side of the intersection.
  • Beacon Ave S and S Avon St – Curb extensions, ADA ramps on the east side of the intersection.
  • Beacon Ave S and S Augusta St – ADA ramps on the east side of the intersection.
  • Beacon Ave S and 55th Ave S – Curb extensions, ADA ramps, a crosswalk and speed humps, along Beacon Ave S.
  • Beacon Ave S & 56th Ave S – ADA ramps on the east side of the intersection.
  • S Luther St and 55th Ave S – A curb extension and ADA ramps at the existing school crosswalk.

Schedule

Construction began in January 2018, and crews completed work in April 2018.

The Safe Routes to School (SRTS) program is funding project design as well as the education and encouragement programs. Project construction is funded by a WSDOT SRTS grant and the 9-year Levy to Move Seattle, approved by voters in 2015. Learn more about the Levy to Move Seattle.
