Project description

Improving chronic flooding and drainage issues in South Park

SPU has completed construction of the South Park Pump Station which will send stormwater runoff to the Duwamish Waterway during high tide events when the storm drain system cannot drain by gravity. In doing so, the pump station will reduce flooding on roads that have a formal stormwater collection system (including catch basins and inlets). The pump station will work in unison with the South Park Drainage and Roadway Partnership project to reduce flooding in the South Park lower industrial basin. The project is supported in part by funding from the King County Flood Control District.

Community benefits

This project works in tandem with the South Park Drainage and Roadway Partnership project to reduce flooding in the industrial and residential areas in the northern part of South Park. Pipe improvements from the partnership project will collect and convey flows to the existing drainage system and lessen overall flooding. The drainage system will direct stormwater to this flood control pump station, which will pump stormwater to the Lower Duwamish Waterway, and to the future water quality facility.

Community engagement

Throughout project design in 2017-2019, SPU met one-on-one with adjacent industrial businesses and property owners to gather feedback to inform project design.

During construction between 2020 to 2023, SPU continued to work with impacted industrial businesses and property owners to keep them informed and to minimize construction impacts to the community.
